Drumintoul Lodge was built in 1877 with only one year’s shooting income. The Lodge was let to shooting and stalking tenants until 1960, when the parents of the present Johnnie Grant of Rothiemurchus moved here from Inverdruie House. As the first permanent occupants they installed electricity, until then it had been lit with paraffin lamps with gas lighting for special occasions.

During the Second World War the Lodge was used by Kampeni Linge (Norwegian Commandos) as a training base for their commando raids into Norway. These raids were made famous by the movie The Heroes of Telemark filmed in 1965, starring Kirk Douglas, Richard Harris and Ulla Jacobsson. The King of Norway often stayed in the lodge during his frequent visits to his troops. An unexploded hand grenade was found when the Lodge’s Loch was drained in 1985. The original bunkers used by the commandos can still be seen on the tree-lined driveway leading to Drumintoul Lodge.

More recently the Lodge has been re-roofed and re-wired and a brand new kitchen has been installed. The heather that once surrounded the lodge before 1960 is being encouraged to grow again, and many of the fast growing birch trees have been cleared to enable visitors to see the outstanding views of the Cairngorms.Drumintoul Lodge is now used for corporate events, weddings, exclusive dinners, celebrations and many other events.
